Nick Dinsmoor, our COO at Reel Axis, sat down with guest host Sivana Brewer on the COO Alliance podcast — the world's leading community for seconds in command. The conversation covered everything from the daily habits that keep high-performing COOs out of the weeds to how AI is reshaping what agencies actually do.

Here are the key takeaways.

Ignoring the Noise Is a Superpower

The best COOs don't react to every fire. Nick talks about building the discipline to filter signal from noise — understanding which problems are real and which ones resolve themselves. It's not about ignoring your team. It's about not letting urgency override importance.

"The critical habit is knowing what to not respond to," Nick explains. "If you're reacting to everything, you're leading nothing."

Radical Candor Without the Edge

Reel Axis runs on transparency — with clients, with the team, with results. But Nick shares a hard-won lesson: radical transparency can turn toxic if it lacks empathy. The pivot that saved their team culture wasn't less honesty — it was better-delivered honesty.

The framework: be direct about the problem, generous about the person, specific about the fix.

How AI Completely Upended Content Marketing

This is where the conversation gets especially relevant for any B2B leader. Nick breaks down what happened when AI disrupted the content marketing playbook:

  • Volume became free: Anyone can produce content now. That killed the "more content = more traffic" strategy overnight.
  • Quality became table stakes: If AI can write a passable blog post, your content needs to be genuinely expert-driven to stand out.
  • Distribution became the differentiator: Creating content is 20% of the value. Getting it in front of the right people — through AI platforms, syndication, and strategic placement — is the other 80%.

This is exactly the shift that led Reel Axis to evolve from a traditional demand gen agency into an AI-powered operational leverage company.

The Case for Employees with Side Hustles

One of the most surprising moments: Nick argues that employees running side projects actually makes them better at their day jobs. Why?

  • They develop ownership mentality — they understand what it means to ship something that matters
  • They bring back cross-pollinated ideas from different industries and contexts
  • They stay sharp because they're constantly learning, not just executing

"I'd rather have someone who's hungry and building on the side than someone who clocks in, clocks out, and never thinks about growth," Nick says.

Ruthless Prioritization in Practice

Nick shares his actual framework for deciding what gets done and what gets cut:

  1. Impact score: If this gets done, what's the revenue or operational impact? Score 1–10.
  2. Effort score: How much time and how many people? Score 1–10.
  3. Dependency check: Is anything else blocked until this is done? If yes, it jumps the queue.
  4. The 48-hour test: If we don't do this in the next 48 hours, does anything bad happen? If no, it's not urgent.

Simple, but consistently applied it keeps the team focused on the 20% of work that drives 80% of results.

The 95/5 Rule

Nick references the 95/5 rule from B2B marketing: only 5% of your addressable market is actively buying at any given time. The other 95% isn't ready yet. Most companies waste budget trying to convert the 95%. The smart ones invest in being memorable, so when that 95% becomes the 5%, they think of you first.

This principle drives Reel Axis's approach to both client work and their own marketing — content, brand presence, and AI optimization are all long-game investments in being the obvious choice when timing aligns.
